A substance is a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup and a specific set of properties. Ex: table salt (NaCl), sugar, baking soda An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means. Elements are the simplest substances. Ex: aluminum, copper, oxygen, etc. A compound is a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio. Ex: CO2 2. We will begin a "Mystery Lab", which is difficult to do at home without the materials.
