Today students learned why we have been tracking the sunrise and sunset times. We talked about what an equinox is and took the following notes: Equinox: the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are (nearly) of equal length (Spring equinox is typically March 20). The line of best fit is an educated guess about where a linear equation might fall in a set of data plotted on a scatter plot. Then, I walked students through how to make a scatter plot/line of best fit to predict when the Fall/Autumnal equinox will fall (not the date they have on the calendar). Templates and sunrise/sunset data are attached below. An example of a graph I made is also attached (I used the amount of daylight and days in September to make the graph).
